A member of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) has been injured in a clash with a group of local drug peddlers at Shadipur village’s Beltola area in Benapole.
BGB, however, detained one of the drug peddlers named Monirul Islam and seized 100 bottles of phensedyl before the clash had started on Sunday, said Commander of BGB 49th battalion's Benapole Integrated Check Post Nayeb Subedar Abul Kashem.
The injured BGB member was identified as Havildar Yunus, he said.
Acting on a tip-off, a BGB team had conducted a raid at Beltola when the drug peddlers were smuggling in phensedyl from India.
Kashem said: “During the raid, we caught Monirul and seized the phensedyl while the rest of his gang fled the scene. But they later returned to free Monirul when he was being transferred to Benapole Port police station.
“They attacked us with sticks and stones, leaving Yunus injured.”
He said the BGB members had opened fire in retaliation, but there were no casualties.
