The yaba smugglers in Chittagong have started resorting to transport business for smuggling banned drug yaba to dodge the law enforcement agencies, say police.
Md Shahidullah, deputy commissioner (Bandar) of the Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, told reporters on Monday after DB officials seized as many as 120,ooo yaba pills from a covered van that was carrying fish from Chittagong’s Natun Fishery Ghat area.
Police also arrested three drug peddlers who were later identified as Md Mamun, 33, driver of the covered van, and brothers Md Shahjahan, 32, and Md Anwar, 20.
Acting on a tip-off, police set up a check post at Shah Amanat Bridge area of the city where the smugglers were smuggling yaba tablets from Teknaf to Dhaka in the covered van.
“We found the yaba pills inside a hidden chamber on the covered van during the stop and search,” Shahidullah said.
He added that the trio later confessed during preliminary questioning that the covered van was specially designed for smuggling yaba tablets.
A case was filed against them over the yaba seizure with Bakalia police station.
