A 36-year-old tailor who joined the militant group Jama’at ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to exact revenge on a neighbour has confessed to his involvement in the murder of Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio.
Mohaddes Ali alias Bijoy was picked up from his shop in Shahjahanpur area of Bogra by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on October 19.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed that he participated in the murder of Hoshi Kunio in Rangpur on October 3, 2015.
“Mohaddes joined terror group JMB in 2015 to take revenge on his neighbour,” RAB 12 Commanding Officer (CO) Selim Mohammad Jahangir told the Bangla Tribune. “He never got his revenge but he got involved in militancy.”
The CO said Mohaddes had described how a neighbour had tied his mother to a tree and assaulted her.
“He tried to save his mother but was beaten up in the process. Instead of helping, other neighbours took a video of the incident on their mobile phones,” he said.
Mohaddes vented his fury over the incident to his childhood friend Mostafiz, alias Boma Shakil, who later invited him to join JMB to help him get revenge.
The RAB official added: “Mostafiz introduced Mohaddes to JMB’s notorious militant leaders Rajibul and Rajib Gandhi some time in the middle of 2015. Mohaddes swore loyalty to Rajib, who gave him a mobile phone with a SIM card.”
After a period of 15-20 days, Rajib instructed Mohaddes to meet him at the Shapla Chattar intersection of Rangpur.
The militant leader tasked Mohaddes with attacking a Shia mosque in the northern part of Bangladesh.
Mohaddes was then taken to a nearby tin-shed building, where he met several other JMB activists, namely Rafiq, Shafiq, Bike Hasan and Rahul.

At that building, Mohaddes received his organisational name of Bijoy. He stayed there with the others activists for four days.
However, Rajib called off the attack on the targeted Shia mosque and told Mohaddes to return home.
Rajib again summoned Mohaddes at the tin-shed building after two weeks and taught him how to safely load, unload and shoot a gun.
Later, Rajib gave Mohaddes a 6mm pistol and four bullets while Rafiq received a 9mm pistol and four bullets.
Mohaddes, already trained in the use of small arms, was chosen by the JMB to murder Japanese national Hoshi Kunio.
With instructions from Rajib, Mohaddes left the tin-shed building on a bike with Hasan Rafiq for the operation on October 3, 2015.
Rajib met the trio at Satmatha intersection in Rangpur and ordered them to murder the elderly man, terming him “an enemy of the almighty.”
Mohaddes and Rafiq took up positions beside the Kaunia Alutari road around 8:15am on the day of the murder, while Hasan waited on a nearby road with the getaway motorcycle.
As soon as the duo spotted Hoshi Kunio on a rickshaw, Rafiq blocked the road and shot the Japanese national multiple times.
Rafiq and Mohaddes then made a quick getaway on Hasan’s motorcycle.
Hasan later instructed Mohaddes to go home and wait for further instructions. RAB sources confirmed that he was staying at his native home before he was detained at his shop.
