A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced a mugger to death and two others to life term imprisonment for killing a businessman in Keraniganj in 2012.
Judge SM Kuddus Zaman of Dhaka District and Sessions judges’ court delivered the verdict in a packed courtroom.
The convict Md Bacchu Miah, 25, has been given the death sentence; Md Sajal, 27 and Sumon alias Messi, 28, are to be imprisoned for life-term.
Sajal and Sumon were tried in absentia as they went into hiding after getting bail from the High Court.
A total of 11 witnesses out of 12 testified before the court on different dates in the case.
According to the case files, the convicted muggers intercepted Nobab Ali, a vendor of glasses, when he was at Beribadh in Battoli area on his way to Pargendaria residence in Keraniganj from Sadarghat area of the capital on February 3, 2012.
The killers tried to take his money and belongings but when Nobab resisted, the muggers stabbed the vendor indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot.
The victim’s brother-in-law Nazrul Islam filed a case with Keraniganj Model Police Station over the murder.
Later, Police arrested mugger Bacchu in this connection who confessed before the court under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. With the information from the arrestee, police also arrested Sajal and Sumon.
