12 New JMB 'Abdullah' under CTTC scanner
'Abdullah' seems to be a popular choice for an alias among militants. Security forces say they have information about at least 12 Bangladeshi-origin New JMB members, who share the same alias 'Abdullah', and are active inside the country and abroad. After militant Abdullah blew himself up in Mirpur during an anti-militant raid, security forces started looking into absconding New JMB militants with the name 'Abdullah', Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit sources said. A CTTC official said militant Abdullah killed in Mirpur's Darussalam was under their scanner. Twelve others, who also use the name Abdullah, are being investigated.

CTTC chief Monirul Islam said there are many militants who added Abdullah to their names. A RAB official said many militants choose the alias Abdullah as it was the name of Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) father. New JMB militants use fake names and codes for communicating with each other. Many members of the group try to remain active using the same name, a CTTC official added. CTTC sources said Ansarullah Bangla Team militant Abdullah alias Abdullah Al Mamun, hailing from Mymensingh, had been active since 2011. He has recently been nabbed by Indian security forces from Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar.

After converting to Islam and joining militants, Gouranga Kumar Mondol assumed the name Abdullah Hasan alias Abdullah Al Zafri. He is also known as Tamim Dwari. The other name used by him is Azizur Rahman alias Amir Hamza. He hails from Satkhira's Uttarpara and converted to Islam when studying at the higher secondary level, and assumed the name Tamim Dwari. Another convert, who also used the name Abdullah, is also in the CTTC list. He was known as Provat Kumar before converting to Islam and joining Ansarullah Bangla Team. He then assumed the name Abdullah and later joined the New JMB. A huge stockpile of explosives was found at his Porahati's village home. He was later killed in an anti-militant operation. Beside them, another New JMB member, killed in Dhaka about a year and a half ago was known as Abdullah alias Noman. About the Abdullah killed in Darussalam, RAB chief Benazir Ahmed said: “Security forces first got information about his association with JMB in 2005. He joined New JMB in 2013 and was a member of the Sarowar-Tamim faction.” This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
