The Banani rape suspects: Where are they now?
Shafat Ahmed, the accused in a case filed for the rape of two women at The Raintree Hotel in Dhaka now leads a luxurious life in a peaceful environment. As he is the son of the owner of Apan Jewellers, he is confined to a cell at Kashimpur High Security Jail. Here, he gets a room all to himself. More than Tk1 lakh is deposited to his prisoner card every month. In exchange for that money, he leads a luxurious life, jail officials have assured Bangla Tribune. According to prison employees, among the other four accused, Nayeem Ashraf and Abdul Halim are at the general ward of Kashimpur Central Jail-2, Shadman Sakif and driver Billal Hossain are kept at the general ward of Kashimpur Central Prison-1. And bodyguard Rahmat Ali is kept at the general ward of Dhaka Central prison. A jail official, refusing to be identified, told the Bangla Tribune: “Usually dangerous terrorists are confined in the high security cell. The environment here is comparatively better than at other cells. Shafat Ahmed is being held at the same environment as the ones of dangerous terrorists.” Another employee reported that Shafat's reckless attitude is the reason why he is considered dangerous. That is why information on which room he is residing at can't be disclosed. In reply to the question of how dangerous Shafat is, Senior Jail Superintendent Mizanur Rahman told the Bangla Tribune: “He is not that dangerous. The environment here is nice with no complications of food and sleep. Hence he is living like an ordinary prisoner under custody.”

On the other hand, Kashimpur Central Jail-2 Jail Superintendent Prashanta Kumar Banik told the Dhaka Tribune: “Nayeem Ashraf is held at the general ward of Central Prison. Every ward houses 20-25 prisoners. He is being held according to the Jail Code.” The accused Shadman and Billal are in two different cells of Kashimpur Central Jail. However, the amount of money deposited in the prisoner card of the accused is not disclosed. Regardless of the amount of money, the food has to be purchased from the prison cafeteria. To explain why the accused of the same case are held at different places, Kashimpur Central Jail-1 Superintendent Shubhrata Kumar Pal said: “Since they are all involved in the same crime, it is best to keep them apart. Since we have four prisons, it is convenient for us to keep them separated.”   This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
