The family that steals together
Shafiqul Islam Shwapon, 39, was recently released on bail in a robbery case but within a month of his release on June 20, he was arrested again while trying to sell stolen goods in Chittagong’s New Market. Police also arrested his wife and his brother-in-law’s wife. Chittagong’s Police’s Detective Branch Supervisor M Ilias Khan confirmed that the entire family was involved in stealing or other criminal activities. The three were captured from a hotel in Chittagong on Sunday night on account of selling stolen goods, Ilias confirmed. The other two convicts are Shwapon’s wife Selina Akhter, 27, and his brother-in-law’s wife Nupur Akhter Rupa, 19. They are all residents of Wahab Colony in Dhaka’s Basabo. The police confiscated two HP laptops, one DSLR camera, an old Grameenphone modem box, a gold locket, Tk5,000 in cash, and other goods totalling Tk2.76 lakh. Ilias Khan told the Bangla Tribune: “There were two separate robberies in Chittagong’s Pachlaish area on July 28, and in Halishahar on July 30. We were able to confirm Selina’s involvement after analysing CCTV footage from the Halishahar robbery. We were able to locate Selina when she was attempting to sell two laptops in New Market. They were then arrested from the Paramount Hotel in Kotwali. Cases have been filed in three separate police stations against them.” “Everyone in Shwapon’s family is involved in theft. They frequently band together to rob houses and then stay at expensive hotels in the city. There they collect information on people living in the surrounding flats. They introduce themselves as relatives of those people and rob their houses,” he added. Ilias also told the Bangla Tribune that Shwapon has four robbery cases filed against him. He and his wife were recently released on bail from a case in Barisal. His brother-in-law Mayin Uddin Mohon is still serving jail time for the same case. Shwapon had previously also been arrested in 2008 for falsely claiming to be a major and deceiving other people. The story was first published on the Bangla Tribune
