Police have arrested 26 people including five Dhaka University (DU) students and Jagannath University’s Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Vice President Shamsuddin Ahmed during an anti-drug crackdown near Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan.
Shahbag police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasan said they arrested the people during a drive Thursday night.
The five arrestees introduced themselves as Rezaul Haque Chowdhury, a Master's student at the Law department, Ariful Islam from Botany department, Faisal Haque from Renewable Energy department, Suzan Sardar, a fourth year student at the Music department, and Anwar Hossain, a Master's student at the Bangla department.
OC Abul Hasan said: "Five of the arrestees are introducing themselves as DU students.
"We have communicated with DU’s acting proctor M Amjad Ali for confirmation," Abul added.
DU's acting proctor M Amjad Ali said the five arrestees, who had claimed to be DU students, did not have DU ID cards with them. Therefore, the university authority could not still confirm whether they are DU students or not.
"As soon as we get the confirmation we will take action against them," Amjad added.
