A man charged with beating a woman of the indigenous Robidas community to death, after raping her in Sutang Bazar area of Habiganj Sadar upazila, has been sent to jail.
Habiganj Judicial Magistrate Shampa Reza had sent Shailu Mian, 35, a resident of the same area, to jail after police produced him before her court on Sunday afternoon, confirmed Habiganj Sadar police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Najim Uddin.
Police detained Shailu from his residence around 10am on Saturday.
A case was filed with Habiganj Sadar police station against Shailu later around 2am on Sunday.
Shoma Robidas, a sister of the victim, filed the case.
Witnesses claimed Shailu had entered the 30-year-old Sukhia Robidas's house in Sutang Bazar area around 7am on Saturday, finding her home alone. Sometime later, Sukhia was seen running away from the house.
Shailu chased the woman wielding a log, and at one point the victim stumbled on the rough ground.
The man was seen hitting the woman brutally with the log, leaving her dead on the spot.
Relatives of the victim also claimed she was raped by Shailu before the murder.
The victim used to live with her 12-year-old brother at the house. Her husband was murdered beside their house in 2013. Relatives claimed the family had long been harassed by influential people in the locality over the ownership of a piece of land.
