Mentally ill woman gang raped in Chittagong

Police in Chittagong arrested two men in connection to a case filed over raping a mentally ill women in Sitakunda upazila on Sunday. The arrested men—Md Harun alias Harun driver, 35, and Md Liton, 33, were arrested on Sunday and sent to jail after they were produced before a Chittagong court, said police. The police said the woman was raped in a bush beside the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway some 300 yards from the Sitakunda police station. “Three men forcibly took the mentally ill woman to a bush near the Halimer garage beside the highway and raped her, early Sunday morning. She later went to a local hospital where the hospital authority informed the police,” said Mahbub Milky, inspector (operation) of Sitakunda police station, adding that police arrested the men based on the rape survior’s information. “The 30-year old married woman from Laxmipur district was sent to One Stop Crisis Centre of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for medical test on Monday morning while she filed a case accusing three persons with Sitakunda police station,” added Inspector Mahbub. Quoting the women’s father, Inspector Mahbub told Dhaka Tribune: “She developed a mental illness after her divorce. She was missing from her father’s house for five days. She somehow managed to get to Chittagong and fell prey to these criminals.”
