Woman gang-raped on moving microbus in Savar

Update : 25 May 2017, 12:05 PM
A woman has been gang-raped on a moving microbus in Savar on the Dhaka-Aricha highway Tuesday night. This incident is a harrowing reminder of the 2015 rape of a Garo woman in Dhaka. The victim, a resident of Ashulia, went to Manikganj to settle a debt with a shopkeeper. The woman then accepted the latter's offer to drop her home on a microbus, Savar police Sub-inspector (SI) Zillur Rahman said. When the microbus reached Dhaka-Aricha Highway’s Golara bus stand area around 7:30pm, two of the shopkeeper’s friends got into the microbus and tied her hands with a rope and gagged her. The men dumped her at an isolated spot adjacent to the Savar’s Public Administration Training Centre around 11pm after raping her, the SI said. A police highway patrol recovered the woman and took her to Savar Health Complex. The victim is being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital's One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC). Savar upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Amjadul Haque said: "We sent her to the OCC after we ascertained that the woman had been raped." The victim’s family said she lived in Manikganj with her husband before recently moving to Ashulia. Her husband, a driver, rushed to Dhaka after learning about the incident. He said he was preparing to file a case. SI Zillur said Savar and Manikganj police would have to coordinate the investigation.
