Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a London-based Bangladeshi emigrant on the charge of raping a 12-year-old girl from Beanibazar, Sylhet.
The victim too was rescued at the same time.
The law enforcement agency conducted a drive at the residence of Sarwar Ahmed, 38, on Sunday morning, confirmed RAB-9 Senior Additional Superintendent of Police and Senior Assistant Director Moinuddin Chowdhury.
The RAB officer said: “The victim and her mother were domestic helpers at the residence of Sarwar. The victim was being tortured by him for many days, and when her mother came to know of it, she wanted to leave the job and go back with her daughter to their village.”
The victim's mother was admitted to Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition after Sarwar beat her for trying to leave the house with her daughter, the rape victim.
RAB then conducted the drive on the basis of a complaint she made while admitted at the hospital.
Legal steps will be taken against Sarwar and a case will be filed with Beanibazar police, the senior ASP said.
The victim was admitted to the hospital’s One-Stop Crisis Centre, he said.
