15-year-old kept hostage and gang-raped in Jurain school, one arrested

One person was arrested on Thursday over the gang-rape of a 15-year-old girl while keeping her hostage at Jurain Ideal High on April 28. “Police have nabbed Swapan, a security guard of the school, after the rape case was lodged,” said Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Kodomtoli police station. However, seven other suspects in the incident are still at large. They are Shaon, Munna, Jalil, Mishal, Masud, Sajib and Tanjil. Police said the girl had married without her family’s approval and used to live with her husband. She had left her husband's residence on the evening of April 28 over a domestic issue and was not a student of the school. “That same evening, the victim was forcibly taken into the school by Shaon, one of the suspects whom the victim knew, and was raped by him as well as seven others,” OC Wazed Ali said. The victim lodged a case on April 29 with Kodomtoli police station against the eight. All the accused are residents of the Jurain area. In the first information report (FIR), the victim said the gang had hired a rickshaw for her after the rape. The victim said she first went to her uncle’s house from where she contacted the local representative for justice, but was suggested to keep silent. The victim however lodged the case with the police. The police have nabbed one of the suspects and are conducting drives to arrest the rest. The victim is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
