One held with illegal cigarette consignment at Dhaka airport
Customs Intelligence of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport has detained a person with a large consignment of cigarettes worth Tk14.4 lakh brought illegally into Bangladesh. The detainee is Md Abdul-Al-Hossain. He reached Dhaka from Kuwait on a Kuwait Airways flight at 4:30am on Wednesday. Customs Intelligence Director General (DG) Moinul Khan said: "Being tipped-off, we raided the airport belts of the customs hall, where Abdul was scanned with some 185 cartons of illegal cigarettes hidden in his baggage." "Abdul had brought in some 3,700 pieces of foreign cigarettes including Dunhill, Essy Light, and Mond," he added. Customs officials said the seized cigarette packets did not have warning written in Bangla. They suspected the man had smuggled the products to evade high tariff (nearly 450%) on cigarette. According to Bangladesh’s import policy, bringing foreign-made cigarettes without anti-smoking warning labels is prohibited.
