A parliament member's remarks on the role of law enforcement agencies to cap militant activities created such a row on Tuesday that a cabinet minister and the police chief had to step in to reiterate the administration's counter-terrorism message.
MP Nezamuddin said: “We have the best law enforcement agencies in the world. Because, you first caught the militants and then you killed them. No other law enforcement agency anywhere in the world could have done it.”
Chittagong-15 MP Dr Abu Reza Md Nezamuddin Nadwi made the remarks at a book launch organized by the Rapib Action Battalion at Lakeshore Hotel in Dhaka.
The book launched at the event was published by RAB aiming to de-radicalise people by explaining Quranic verses with the help of the Islamic Foundation and other scholars.
The MP’s remark was swiftly refuted by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque who were in attendance as well.

Both said police and RAB only reacted to the militants attacking them. The home minister and police chief claimed the first objective always was to capture the militants alive.
IGP Shahidul said the police do not kill militants in cold-blood.
He said: “Militant dens are packed with explosives which they use to commit suicide. Look at the Moulvibazar and Sitakunda raids, experienced the same.
“We do not want to kill anyone,” he stressed.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman said the MP had made the remark in the heat of the moment.
He explained MP Nezamuddin was merely praising police for their tenacity in dealing with militancy. The home minister also stressed that police only shoot in self-defence.
