Police arrest 7 suspected militants in Mymensingh

Seven suspected militants have been detained in a raid conducted at a house in Kalibari area of Mymensingh town. The arrested are Shahidul Islam, 28, and Ashiqur Rahman, 28, from Haluaghat, Al-Amin, 25, from Dhobaura in Mymensingh while Masum Ahmed, 30, Shah Alam Hossain Shamim, 27, Roman Mia, 27, from Purbadhala, Netrokona, and Nasir Uddin, 27, from Mohonganj, Netrokona. Mymensingh Superintendent of Police Syed Nurul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “Based on a tip, we raided the house and detained the militants around 1pm on Monday.” In the raid jointly conducted by RAB and police around 11:45am, the law enforcers broke open the door to enter the house. The police recovered two computers, a large number of jihadi books, explosive materiel and a cheque book confirming transaction of Tk70 lakh from the house. According to the police, the house and its residents were under close surveillance for a few days. The police also conducted another raid at the other house of the owner, advocate Asif Anwar Murad. SP Nurul said Asif was not present during the drive and they have been trying to contact him. On the other hand, the arrested seven have been taken in custody for an interrogation, but are yet to disclose any information. Police headquarters recently circulated a list of nearly 5,000 suspected militants to all district police chiefs. They are conducting special drives across Bangladesh to apprehend the militants.
