Brahmanbaria drug dealer killed in gunfight
A drug dealer was killed in an alleged gunfight with the Detective Branch of the police in Bhatshala area of the district, amid an anti-narcotics crackdown that began two months ago. The dead is Kawsar Bhuiyan, 45, son of Abdul Razzak of the town’s Kandipara area. “He was carrying drugs in a pick-up van and started firing on us after we asked to stop him, forcing us retaliate as well,” DB Officer-in-Charge Md Mafiz Uddin said in the evening. Two of his cohorts managed to escape. “We seized a pipe gun, four cartridges and 198 yaba tablets from the spot,” Mafiz said. Kawsar had at least six cases filed against him, wife Rina Begum said. She said that two policemen had picked him up on Saturday evening. They found the body at Sadar hospital on Sunday morning. The family was in dark about his death throughout the day as those who kept the body at the hospital did not inform the police. The anti-drug drives began in the district two months ago when Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman threatened the local drug peddlers of dire consequences if they had not stopped the crime. At least four people including Kawsar have been killed in gunfights with the law enforcers since then.
