A man and his son were shot by miscreants in Motijeel on Tuesday, while the two were returning home on a rickshaw.
The injured are Shamsul Haque, 58, and his son Ashraful Haque, 28. Shamsul is employed at the auditor general’s office whereas Ashraful works at the Religious Affairs Ministry’s accounts section. They are both undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
According to Motijeel police station OC Mohammad Omar Faruq, the two were on their way home from the office on a rickshaw around 5:30pm when they were intercepted by four to five motorcycle riders.
The riders asked the two to get down from the rickshaw before shooting both. Shamsul was shot in an arm and both legs, while Ashraful was shot in the back above the waist, the OC said.
OC Omar added that the motive behind the attack was unclear, as the victims’ personal belongings did not seem to be missing.
They were considering if previous enmity may have played a role in the attack, though a hijacking was yet to be ruled out, said the OC.
When contacted, a conscious Shamsul told the Dhaka Tribune that Tk10,000 was snatched from him by the miscreants. Police have not confirmed the claim.
