Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal made the comment while addressing a programme to mark the Prisons Week 2017 at Kashimpur Jail on Sunday.
“The prime minister’s good intention made it possible that prisoners will very soon be allowed to contact their families by phone.
“Following her directives, video conferencing facility will be introduced in the prisons to conduct the trial procedures for ‘sensitive inmates,’” the minister said.
He noted that the government had been continuing its support for the development and modernisation of the Prisons Department.
Once the prisons had been considered as a place for executing sentences, but “the present government has been working to turn the jails into rehabilitation centres,” he added.
