One killed in clash over party feud in Sylhet
One person was killed and 30 others injured in a clash between two groups of rival villagers in Sylhet’s Osmani Nagar upazila over enmity centring the upcoming upazila election. The deceased is Saiful Islam, 17 from North Kalnirchar. Local sources said the supporters of Awami League backed candidate Ataur Rahman (from North Kalnirchar) and Awami League rebel candidate Joglu Chowdhury (from South Kalnirchar) got involved in verbal dispute in the upazila’s Banglabazar area on Saturday night during their election campaign. The two groups engaged in a brutal clash on Sunday morning carrying over the dispute of last night, the sources added. Osmani Nagar police station OC Abdul Awal Chowdhury said both the sides used local weapons during the clash which caused several injuries and one among the injured died while being taken to hospital. Police brought the situation under control firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets, the OC added. Additional superintendent of police (Media) Suggyan Chakma told the Dhaka Tribune that the supporters of Ataur Rahman blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway for one hour after the clash. The blockade was withdrawn with the police intervention, he added. When asked whether Saiful was killed by the rubber bullets fired by police, Suggyan replied rubber bullets had never caused the death of a person. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident, Suggyan added.
