Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) said more than 3,100 drug peddlers are active across the country.
DNC Director (Operations and Intelligence) Syed Towfique Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune after a monthly press briefing held at DNC Heaquaters in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area on Thursday.
The listing of the drug peddlers is still under process, Towfique added.
The state-run organisation that has been working for the prevention of drug relevant activities also pointed out yaba smuggling as the major challenge for narcotics control.
Towfique, while presenting his written speech before the newsmen, said Bangladesh and Myanmar will sit for a three-day meeting from March 8-10 to discuss the closing of yaba factories located on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
According to DNC intelligence, currently a total of 37 yaba factories run their operations at the border-lying town of Mongdu in Myanmar.
The meeting is scheduled to be held in Myanmar with a 12-member team, comprising of high officials of DNC, Border Guard Bangladesh, Bangladesh Police and other concerned authorities participating in the meeting.
