Another child tortured for allegedly stealing in Rajshahi
The child is the son of Hafizur Rahman from the Baroipara village in the upazila. The incident occurred at the Khan Filling Station in the Puthia upazila of the district in the early hours of Tuesday. According to sources, the boy was caught trying to steal the CD player from a public bus at the Khan Filling Station. The workers of the station then tied the child to a truck from dawn till around 10am, at which point they severely beat him, cut his hair and covered his face with ink. The workers finally released Nazmul in the face of protests from locals. Owner of the filling station Al Mamun Khan said that the BP Paribahan bus had stopped at his filling station while on the way to a wedding. He claims that the boy tried to remove the CD player from the bus while the bus driver and his helpers had stepped out to use the washroom. Once caught, the boy was tied to a truck. Nazmul’s father said: “They have wronged my son for false claims that he was trying to steal. For this, I want justice.” When contacted, Puthia police station OC Hafizur Rahman said: “We received news about the child torture at the filling station from a journalist, and sent a police team to the location. However, they did not find the victim or torturers. We are looking into the incident.” Earlier, on February 14, two were arrested for abusing 12-year-old Ariful Islam, a student from Tarapur High School of Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila, after they tied him to a tree and beat him for allegedly stealing a mobile phone SIM card.
