Mitu’s father suspects Babul
When contacted on Saturday after the home minister’s comment that the police had not found any concrete evidence of Babul’s involvement in Mitu murder, the victim’s father Md Mosharraf Hossain said: “Considering overall circumstances and developments in the investigation, we think that Babul might have been involved in this murder.” Asked about his previous statements, Mosharraf, a retired police inspector, said: “I did not ever say that Babul is innocent. Rather I said whoever is involved in the murder, police should find them out through investigation.” Mitu was stabbed and shot to death in front of her son near her house in Chittagong’s GEC intersection on June 5 last year. Babul was in Dhaka at that time to join the Police Headquarters as an SP. “We have learnt from media reports that Special Branch Sub-Inspector Akram Hossain Liton’s [killed in 2015] wife Bonani Binte Bonni and Babul had an extramarital affair. Recently we heard that Babul’s family gave shelter to Bonni in their home.” Akram’s sister Jannat Ara Parveen Rini met Mosharraf in January and alleged that the extramarital relation between Babul and Bonni was behind the murder. Babul denied the allegation in a Facebook post on January 31, saying that he had been staying in South Sudan in a UN Peacekeeping Mission when the murder took place. He also criticised the media who published fabricated news regarding him. Mosharraf said after the murder, Babul was questioned by the DB police. Later he lost his job. “Some people claimed he had been forced to quit. Meanwhile, Babul managed a job and left our home. The kids were admitted to a school but he took them away too.” Mitu’s father also alleged that Babul was not monitoring the murder case’s investigation properly, though he had filed the complaint. The sisters of SI Akram held a press conference in Jhenaidah on Friday where they alleged that Babul had conspired to kill Akram because of his extramarital affair and influenced the case’s investigation to show it as a road accident. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Saturday told reporters that Babul would be arrested if they found any concrete evidence against him. “The administration will work as per the law.” The CMP DB is dealing with the case, but investigation is sluggish as the key accused, listed criminal Kamrul Islam Musa who shot Mitu after his accomplice Nabi stabbed her, remains to be caught. On December 18, Babul admitted that Musa used to work for him as an informant.
