Bank officer found dead in Uttara rehab centre
The deceased, SM Anwarul Azim Sumon, was principal officer at the Panchlaish branch of Sonali Bank in Chittagong. Sumon, 30, was found hanging from the showerhead by the drawstrings of his pyjamas, Assistant Commissioner (Uttara) Atikul Islam Murad said quoting the rehab centre’s owner. Sumon had been admitted to Re-life Rehabilitation Centre in Sector 7 in Uttara. A law graduate from Chittagong University, he had been abusing substance for the past two years. Re-life In-charge Abdul Wahid told the Dhaka Tribune Sumon had been admitted for about two-and-a-half months. He said Sumon habitually consumed marijuana and yaba. Wahid added that Sumon had been enrolled in several rehab centres in Chittagong before getting admitted at Re-life. During his stay at Re-life, Sumon displayed anger and stubbornness quite frequently. He had arrived with a broken leg, forcing him to walk unsteadily. On Saturday, his father Abu Sufian was scheduled to visit after lunch. However, Sufian had called Sumon and said he could not make it. After throwing a tantrum, Sumon shut himself in the bathroom following lunch. When he did not come out after a while, rehab employees knocked on the door and grew increasingly concerned. They broke down the door and found him hanging. According to the police, the most likely cause of death is suicide. Police said an autopsy would reveal all relevant details. However, Sumon’s family in Chittagong, when informed, contacted the police and said the body will not be subject to autopsy. In response, AC Murad said the family will have to submit a written request to forego the autopsy.
