Killer of 90-year-old imam sent to jail

Update : 11 Feb 2017, 12:28 PM
A Chandpur court has sent a youth, caught after he attacked an elderly imam leading to his death, to jail after the police produced him before it seeking remand. Matlab South OC Kutub Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune Saturday that the court accepted the remand plea and was likely to hear it Sunday. Detained Biplob attacked Maulana Fazlul Huq, 90, with a bamboo stick after the latter performed the Zohr prayers at Kashem Pagla Bari mosque in Doshpara area on Thursday, the OC said. Other devotees rescued the imam and took him to the Upazila Health Complex. He died after being taken to Dhaka for better treatment the same day. Biplob was handed over to the police by the devotees. He was produced before a court Friday. Details about Biplob could not be known immediately. Fazlul Huq had retired as the religion teacher of Matlab Girls High School around 30 years ago and started conducting prayers at the mosque, located just beside his house. The mosque committee had been opposing Fazlul Huq’s holding the post as “he could not remember the verses properly,” the OC said. They asked him to step down, but the imam was indifferent. “He used to stay inside the mosque. At one point, the mosque committee appointed a new imam some 10 days ago. But he did not pay heed to the requests of the mosque committee leaders,” OC Kutub Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune. Police are yet to receive the post-mortem examination report.
