Case filed over attack on Khulna journalist, one held
Police have arrested a suspect for the assault on a journalist in Khulna's Paikgachha upazila last week. Local journalist leader Abdur Razzak Raju and his college teacher wife were attacked on February 6 near their home. They were returning home after attending a rally at Paikgachha protesting against the killing of Sirajganj journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul. Raju is being treated at Khulna Medical College Hospital with slash wounds to his body. His wife Aklima Parvin accused 11 people in a case filed a day after the attack. “We have arrested a suspect but others, including former ruling party student leaders, are absconding,” Inspector SM Azizur Rahman said. Local Awami League leader Sardar Golam Mostofa claimed that one of the attackers was former Chhatra League leader Modhusudon Haldar. “He headed Chhatra League's Kapilmuni unit but is not currently affiliated with the party or its front organisations,” Mostofa said. Raju alleged that his reports on drug cartels and theft of border pillars had angered local gangs. “They threatened me with dire consequences at my house on February 4,” he said. “The same group attacked me and my wife when we were returning home from the February 6 protest rally.” Raju sustained injuries to hands, legs, back and head.
