SI sued for extortion using ‘crossfire’ threat
The plaintiff, Ripon Mridha, a realtor, filed the case at the Barisal’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Mohammad Ali Hossain’s court. Upon registering the lawsuit, the court ordered Metropolitan Magistrate Md Anisur Rahman to submit a probe report in this regard in 15 days. According to the case dockets, the SI, Md Mohiuddin, demanded Tk3 lakh from Ripon and his business partners Afzal Hossain and Ripon Akon in October last year promising them protection from any case and torture. After the trio refused to provide the money, he threatened them with killng in a crossfire, the case records say, adding, Mohiuddin picked up Ripon Mridha and Afzal on October 19 and Ripon Akon on  October 27. He then beat up them by hanging from the ceiling at the police station suing them over false charges. The SI, according to the case, poured hot water on the face of the three people, forcing them to admit the crimes mentioned in two cases filed against them. The three finally came out of jail on bail in December. On Monday, the officer-in-charge Shah Mohammad Awalad Hossain and an SI of the police station along with four others were also sued for over a similar charges. In this incident, the complainant accused them of demanding Tk10 as extortion in exchange of reportedly settling a land dispute.l
