Protests continue over Shimul murder

Our correspondents reported from across the nation on Monday that protesting journalists had demanded capital punishment for Shimul's shooter, Shahjadpur Municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru. In Nilphamari, Syedpur Online Press Club, Reporters' Unity, Reporters' Club and Bangladesh Mafaswal Shangbadik Forum's local chapter arranged a human chain demanding capital punishment for Miru in the town's Pachmatha intersection. They called for an end to repression against journalists around the country and quick trial of journalist murders in the past. In the town of Dimla in the district, Dimla Press Club and Online Press Club held an hour-long human chain at the Smriti Amlan Square around noon. Dimla Union Parishad Chairman Abul Kashem Sarker spoke at the event. In Gopalganj town, the district Press Club also organised a human chain. Senior journalists as well as local politicians spoke at the event. Bangabandhu University Journalists Association took part in the protest. Pirojpur Press Club held a human chain on Pirojpur town's Town Club Road. Journalist leaders as well as politicians and civil society personalities spoke at the event. The protesters demanded exemplary punishment for Shimul's shooter and urged the government to ensure the safety of journalists across the country. In Srimangal, Moulvibazar, local journalists walked in a silent procession wearing black badges and black masks. They started from Press Club Square, going around the main streets of the town and then gathering at Chownohona Square for a human chain and protest rally. Journalists speaking at the rally demanded that Miru be tried under the speedy trial law. They urged the prime minister to employ Shimul's wife with the government and take charge of the upbringing of his children. Later the local Bangladesh Mafaswal Shangbadik Forum chapter also held a protest rally at the same venue.
