Journalists: Police helped Miru flee after he shot Shimul

Update : 07 Feb 2017, 01:47 AM
Referring to eyewitnesses, video footages and media reports, they claimed that police committed the same crime Miru did by opening fire at Shimul in their presence on Thursday. They came up with the allegations in a press conference organised by Sirajganj district police where the Superintendent of Police Miraj Uddin was talking over the incident. Shimul, a correspondent of daily Samakal, was shot during a clash between the supporters of Shahjadpur Government College unit Chhatra League President Bijoy Mahmud Mamun and the Miru’s brother Pintu over previous enmity. He later succumbed to his injuries on Friday afternoon while being taken to Dhaka. In the briefing, the reporters claimed that Miru fled from his home with police being deployed there since the brawl erupted and even after the news of Shimul dying surfaced. On Saturday, the additional SP of Shahjadpur circle, Abu Hasnat, said Miru fired several gunshots despite being forbidden and obstructed by the policemen who were providing him security. Mysteriously, though his firearm was afterwards seized, the mayor managed to flee and remained on the run until he was booked from the capital’s Shyamali area on Sunday night. It is reported that Miru was at his home under police protection until Thursday night and talked to the media over the phone. The journalists pointed out the issues, raising questions over some policemen being negligent in their duty at that time. They also asked the SP why the accused policemen were not given any departmental so far. Replying that the allegation will be probed, he said Miru managed to flee from there dodging the eyes of the police members. The police official, however, claimed Miru’s passport, national ID card and cheque books have already been seized. The shotgun belonging to Miru will be sent to Dhaka for a ballistic test, he added. In another development later in the day, a Sirajganj court sent Miru to jail after police produced him there seeking a seven-day remand.
