Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police made the remarks at a press briefing at DMP’s media centre on Sunday.
In reply to a query, he said: “Although there is no specific threat, our detectives are actively working to neutralise any potential attack given that militancy has not been rooted out yet.”
According to the police, the murders of several bloggers and writers including Avijit Roy, Faisal Arefin Dipan, Oyasiqur Rahman Babu, Niladri Chatterjee in recent years were all carried out by a militant outfit called Ansarullah Bangla Team (Ansar-Al-Islam).
The month-long Ekushey Book Fair is scheduled to be held in February.
Baten claimed almost all the blogger murders had been solved, saying: “We have all the clues to all the murders except for the murder of Xulhaz Mannan. We have arrested many suspects directly involved in the murders.”
When contacted, Mashrukur Rahman Khaled, deputy commissioner of DB (south), told the Dhaka Tribune that they had arrested one Rashidun Nabi for alleged involvement in the murder of blogger Najimuddin Samad. He provided some names – of individuals and organisations – to DB as being directly involved in the murder.
