RAB identified the arrestees as Atiqur Rahman alias Milon, 21, son of Abul Kashem of Nilphamari and Khademul Islam alias Khadem alias Gajoatul, 28, son of Ismail Mir of Barisal. Of these two, Atikur reportedly used to work as a fund carrier while Khadem was a shelter provider.
RAB disclosed the information in a briefing at its media center in Kawranbazar, Dhaka.
While addressing the briefing, Khandakar Lutful Kabir, commanding officer (CO) of RAB 4, said that NEW JMB financier Abdur Rahman alias Sarowar Jahan, who died during a RAB drive in Savar on October 8, was Atikur’s supervisor.
Atikur, on direction from Sarowar, would take money from him and provide it to different NEW JMB dens situated in the Tongi and Gazipur areas of Dhaka, he said.
Quoting the arrestees primary statement, Atikur first met with Khadem while distributing money in a slum of Tongi.
Khadem, on the other hand, was in charge of providing shelter to different NEW JMB supporters, who leave their homes on joining the outfit to take military training, said Lutful.
The RAB-4 CO said that Khadem was inspired to take part in militant activities upon noticing the activities of his younger brother Nazmul. Nazmul used to work in bag making factory in Fakirapool.
Quoting the arrestees, CO Kabir said that Atikur completed his Secondary School Certificate exam in 2011 and the Higher Secondary exam in 2014, from Dimla Islami Degree College. Later, he went to Rangpur from Nilphamari for university coaching and got himself admitted to the social work department of Savar University College in 2015.
During his studies, he met with a person named Fazle Rabbi, in January, through social media site Facebook. It is from him that Atikur got the inspiration to join NEW JMB, said Lutful.
“we are now analyzing information provided by the duo and trying to trace the location of other suspects, whose names were revealed from their statement”, the RAB-4 CO added.
RAB Media and Legal Wing Deputy Director Raisul Azam and other officials of RAB-4 were present at the briefing, among others.
