Locals said, Saiful has been running illegal business for several months and he is connected with drug dealing.
Saiful Islam, son of Zahir Uddin, hailing from Tokeyapara village in the upazila, was also known for his political activities. He was the president of Ward 9 unit Jatiytabadi Jubo Dol, youth wing of the BNP.
Nearly 20 years ago he had married his cousin Nargis. The couple has three girls and one boy. During their conjugal life Saiful used to beat Nargis up over trifling matters. Later, Saiful divorced Nargis and married his elder daughter’s mother-in law.
In January this year, a Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced him to one month and nine days' imprisonment in a case. After getting out of jail, he joined with drug dealing gangs and engaged with the business.
Saidur Islam and Shafiul Islam, brothers of Saiful, claimed that they have compelled to cut relation with Saiful for his misdeeds. They demanded justice over the minor rape.
Sohir Uddin, uncle and ex-father-in law of the accused, alleged Saiful used to beat up his daughter Nargis on regular basis. Even he tortured his daughters.
Saiful had an extra-marital affair with his daughter’s mother-in law and he married her in March in this year, claimed Sohir.
Modon Dash, uncle of the victim, said: “Saiful and his associates are threatening them and asked to compromise with him. Otherwise he and his associates will spoil our life.”
The girl, found after going missing for more than 10 hours, was found in a crop field not far from her home, bore stab marks over her body and even in the private parts, which was the reason of the infection.
The minor had gone missing on October 17 and when her family members were frantically searching for her, one Saiful, the alleged rapist, told them that the girl was taken by a spirit.
To prove his point, he called upon Afzal Hossain, a village quack, who claimed that she would be found the following morning.
This made the family suspicious and the girl’s father filed a complaint with the police station that evening.
They were later confirmed that Saiful was indeed the rapist asking the little girl who knew the alleged rapist and called him uncle.
The victim was first taken to a local health complex from where she was moved to Rangpur and underwent treatment there for a week.
However, an NGO – Peoples Union of the Marginalised Development Organisation (PUMDO) – based in Joypurhat stepped in and paid for the girl to be shifted to Dhaka upon consultation with doctors. She reached DMCH early Tuesday.
Haimanti Sarkar Devi, chief executive of the NGO, said that they were happy that the girl would now receive proper treatment and demanded that the case be tried under a special speedy trial court.
Meanwhile, at the police station concerned, OC Belal Hossain said they would get more information from prime accused Saiful, who had been arrested from Dinajpur town on Monday night.
District Sessions Judge Krishna Kamol granted seven-day remand when Tapon Kumar Chowdhury, investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court yesterday.
