Death row convict killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’
A death row convict has been killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion in Pakarmatha Mamun Petrol Pump area under sadar upazila of Joypurhat district. The deceased is Shafin, 28, son of Narul Islam of Dewanpara village. Rajshahi RAB 5 Captain Lieutenant Colonel Mahbubul Alam said: “Acting on a tip off, we conducted a raid in the area to arrest Shafin around 3am on Wednesday. “Sensing our presence, the criminals opened fire at us.” In retaliation, police fired back that left Shafin bullet wounded. The RAB official said: “He was declared dead when taken to Joypurhat District Modern Hospital.” Confirming the matter, Joypurhat sadar OC Forid Hossain said: “He was a death row convict in Shirajul murder case.” RAB officials said Shafin was an accused in 10 other cases including murder.
