The conspiracy to kidnap and murder Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son and ICT advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has led three police officers to decide to visit the United States to continue the investigation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) submitted a letter recommending three officer to the Home Ministry for approval.
Detective Brance Deputy Commissioner Mashrukur Rahman Khaled told the Dhaka Tribune that he was selected along with two other officers. He will be accompanied by Senior Deputy Commissioner Hasan Arafat and Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Rajib Al Masud.
DMP submitted a report on September 27 that cited the urgent need for investigating officers to visit the scene of the crime between November 20 and December 2. The visit was described to be imperative to the resolution of the case.
Police arrested Shafik Rehman, a veteran journalist on April 16 earlier this year for conspiring to kidnap and kill Joy in USA. The editor of the national daily Amar Desh, Mahmudur Rahman was also arrested on April 18 on the same charges in the same case.
Police claimed that $30,000 was sent from the US to facilitate the conspiracy. Police also claimed that Shafik Rehman was personally sent $10,000 for bribing federal agents and for being part of the conspiracy.
Both were released on bail afterwards.
