Last Monday, another court sentenced Malek to 30 years of imprisonment in an arms case
A Dhaka court has sent Nargis Begum, the wife of former Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) driver Abdul Malek, in a case filed over amassing wealth through illegal means.
Senior Special Judge KM Emrul Kayesh on Thursday rejected her bail plea as she could not show the source of income of nearly Tk1.11 crore and sent her to jail.
Earlier in the day, Nargis had surrendered before the court and submitted the bail petition in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On September 21, ACC had approved the illegal wealth charges against Malek and Nargis.
According to the case statement, Malek provided a fake wealth statement by hiding information on movable and immovable assets worth over Tk93 lakh; and he possessed more than Tk1.5 crore beyond his known sources of income.
Meanwhile, Nargis also accumulated nearly Tk1.11 crore illegally.
Last Monday, another Dhaka court sentenced Malek to 30 years of imprisonment in another case filed under the Arms Act.
He was sentenced to 15 years for possession of firearms and 15 years for possession of ammunition. Although the sentence is for 30 years, Malek must spend just 15 years behind bars as the sentences will run concurrently.
His lawyers said they would appeal against the verdict.
Malek was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion in Dhaka’s Turag area on September 20 last year on charges of extortion and illegal firearms trading.
