The court also granted permanent bail to Kajol and fixed October 20 for indictment hearing

A Dhaka court on Tuesday accepted charges against photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).

Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal passed the order after scrutinising the case dockets and other relevant documents and fixed October 20 for the indictment hearing.

The court also granted permanent bail to Kajol, editor of the daily Pakkhakal, after his defence counsel Jaydur Rahman submitted a bail petition.

Awami League lawmaker from Magura 1 constituency Saifuzzaman Shikhor filed the case against 32 people, including Kajol, with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on March 9 last year bringing allegations of publishing "false news and circulating it on social media".

Detective Branch (DB) of Police Sub-inspector (SI) Mohammad Rassel Mollah, and the investigating officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge-sheet against the photojournalist to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on April 8.

The IO, however, dropped the names of 31 others, including Bangla daily Manabzamin Editor-in-Chief Matiur Rahman Chowdhury and its staff reporter Al Amin, from the charges as their involvement was not found.

According to the charge-sheet, Kajol wrote defamatory, offensive, and indecent writings on his Facebook page against many Awami League and Jubo Mohila League leaders and activists.

For seven months, the lower court refused to grant him bail, until the High Court granted him bail in one of the three DSA cases on November 24, last year. In two other cases, it also asked the investigating officials and the Cyber Tribunal to submit reports.

The High Court on December 17 granted him bail in two other cases after Kajol's lawyer argued that probes had to be completed within 75 days of filing of the cases, and the investigators failed to do so.

The photojournalist walked out of jail on bail on December 25.
