Corruption: Passport official, wife sent to jail on surrender

The two are accused of amassing illegal wealth

A Dhaka Court on Sunday sent Department of Passport and Immigration (DPI) Deputy Assistant Director Motaleb Hossain and his wife Israt Jahan to jail in two cases filed on charges of amassing illegal wealth and concealing wealth information.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Dhaka's Senior Special Judge court passed the order, rejecting their bail petitions in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Earlier in the day, the couple surrendered before the court and submitted bail petitions.

On June 30, ACC Deputy Director Abu Bakr Siddique, filed the cases against Motaleb Hossain and his wife Israt Jahan at the commission’s integrated district office in Dhaka.

According to the cases, Motaleb submitted his wealth statement to the commission showing his asset worth at Tk74.26 lakh during the period from March 11, 2004 to June 30, 2020.

But the ACC inquiry officer found that the DPI official concealed Tk10.79 lakh in his wealth statement, and he also amassed Tk41.23 lakh beyond known sources of his income.

The ACC also found that Motaleb’s wife Israt Jahan concealed Tk99.98 lakh in her wealth statement, and she amassed Tk3.8 crore in illegal wealth from 2009-2020.
