Case filed against Tarique Rahman under DSA

Tarique reportedly said his father, BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, was the first president and was the one to declare the independence of Bangladesh

A case has been filed against 25 people, including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, under the Digital Security Act, 2018 in Sunamganj.

Tarique, in a video message on December 19, allegedly said his father, BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, was the first president and was the one to declare the independence of Bangladesh.

Irked by the video, Moinul Islam, a resident of Raikhal village of Moglabazar Thana, filed the case with Sunamganj Judicial Magistrate Court against 25 people, making the BNP leader the prime accused, around 11:30am on Monday.

The Sylhet court after accepting the case ordered the Sunamganj Sadar police station to investigate the matter, said Akhtaruzzaman Selim, general secretary of the Sylhet Bar Association, confirming the matter.

Apart from Tareq Rahman, the other accused in the case are the United Kingdom BNP President Md Abdul Malik, General Secretary Md Kaysar Ahmed, Shaista Chowdhury Quddus, Misbahuzzaman Suhel, Kamal Uddin, Rahim Uddin, Mahidur Rahman, Anwar Hossain Khokon, Afzal Hossain, Md Abdus Salam, Habibur Rahman, Nasir Ahmad Shaheen, Shah Akter Hossain Tutul, Abul Kalam Azad, Iqbal Hossain, Md Abul Hossain, Helal Nasimuzzaman, Tajbir Chowdhury Shimul, Nasim Ahmed Chowdhury, Emdad Tipu, Dr Mujibur Rahman Mujib, Muleh Uddin Ahmed, Arif Motahar, Kabir Reza and others.

According to the case statement, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman uploaded a video of the zoom meeting on his own YouTube channel at various times, including December 16, 2020. In his speech, Tareq Rahman mentioned his father Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of independence and the first president of Bangladesh.

His statement included propaganda against the Liberation War of Bangladesh, the spirit of the Liberation War, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, the national anthem and the national flag.

In the petition, the plaintiff mentions that the Declaration of Independence issued by the Mujibnagar Government on April 10, 1971, recognized the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the first president of Bangladesh and the Declarator of Independence.
