The court is set to hear bail petition of cartoonist Kishore on Wednesday
The High Court has sought an affidavit on the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who recently died in jail.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the order on Monday, while hearing a petition seeking bail for cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, who was arrested along with Mushtaq in a case filed under the Digital Security Act, 2018.
Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, the defence lawyer, said the bench ordered him to submit an affidavit informing it of the writer’s death soon after he reported it.
The court said Musthaq’s bail plea, which was on its cause list along with Kishore’s petition as well, would be scrapped after the affidavit was submitted.
Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain stood for the state.
The same bench fixed Wednesday for its order on a bail petition for cartoonist Kishore, who has been in jail since May last year following his arrest along with Mushtaq.
Both were accused of propagating disinformation against the government on social media.
Mushtaq passed away at the Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur on Thursday, causing uproar from different quarters demanding justice for him and cancellation or amendment of the DSA.
On February 23, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) filed a petition seeking three-day remand for the two.
