Court indicts four in Sagira Morshed murder case

The prosecution read out the charges and asked the accused whether they are guilty or not. The accused claimed innocence and prayed for justice

A Dhaka court has framed charges against four people for their involvement in the murder of Sagira Morshed some 30 years ago.

Metropolitan Session Judge's Court Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the order on Wednesday after rejecting the discharge petitions submitted by defence lawyers of the accused in the case.

The prosecution read out the charges and asked the accused whether they are guilty or not. The accused claimed innocence and prayed for justice.

The accused are: Dr Hasan Ali Chowdhury, his wife Sayedatul Mahmuda alias Shahin, Anas Mahmud alias Rejwan, and Maruf Reza.

During the hearing, Sagira’s husband Abdus Salam Chowdhury was also present in the court.

Earlier on November 14, 2019,  the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested four suspects in connection with the murder.

On July 23, 1989, Sagira Morshed, 34, was shot dead by a hired assailant in Dhaka’s Siddheshwari area when she was returning home with her daughter from school.

Police arrested Dr Hasan Ali Chowdhury and his wife from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on November 12, Anas Mahmud from Rampura area on November 10, and Maruf Reza from Baily road on November 13.
