SC sets Dec 1 to deliver verdict on tenure of life term

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed December 1 to deliver its verdict on a review petition involving the dispute over the meaning and tenure of a convict's life imprisonment.

A full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Tuesday set the date after concluding rehearing on the review petition filed by a convict-Ataur Rahman Mridha.

Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Mohammad Shishir Manir appeared for the petitioner while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state.

Earlier the apex court heard expert opinions from four amicus curiae -- AF Hasan Ariff, Rokanuddin Mahmud, Abdur Rezak Khan and AM Aminuddin  in this matter.

On February 14, 2017, Ataur Rahman Mridha challenged an apex court verdict that commuted his death penalty to life imprisonment in a murder case.

Later in the same year the convict submitted the petition to the Supreme Court seeking review of its judgment.

 On July 11 last year the Supreme Court fixed to deliver its verdict any day in this regard.
