The Supreme Court has directed the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to dispose off 62 applications against the setting up of landmark pillars on the banks of Turag River within 15 days.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mustafizur Rahman passed the order on Sunday after hearing a supplementary petition.
Advocate Fahad Ahmed stood for the petition while Advocate Manzil Murshid represented the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).
On January 20, one Md Zunayed Ahmed and 61 other families filed a supplementary petition with the High Court, after failing to get any response from BIWTA.
Following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), the High Court on 24 and 25 June 2009 passed its verdict with some directives. In its verdict, the court asked the authorities concerned to carry out a survey according to the Cadastral Survey (CS) and Rivisional Survey (RS) map.
On November 27 last year, 62 families from Borodeshi Mouja in Saver filed complaints against the survey and setting up of demarcation pillars. They went to the High Court after failing to get any response from BIWTA.
Earlier on February 4, the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court order that asked the government to recover the land along the Turag River that were grabbed by two companies--Nishut Jute Mills Ltd of Hameem Group and Hossain Dyeing and Printing Mills Ltd of Anwar Group.
