A Dhaka court set January 7 to hold  hearing on charge framing in Niko graft case against BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others.

Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of Dhaka 9th Special Judge Court passed the order on Monday at the newly built courtroom in front of Keraniganj Central Jail, reports BSS.

The court had set on Monday for holding hearing on charge framing, but the jail authorities couldn’t produce Khaleda Zia before the court as she was undergoing treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Begum Khaleda Zia and four others with the Tejgaon police station on December 9, 2007, accusing them of abusing power to award a gas exploration and extraction deal to Canadian company Niko.

The charge-sheet against Khaleda Zia and 10 others was submitted by the ACC on May 5, 2008. The ACC accused them of making the state exchequer incur a loss of more than Tk 13 thousand crore by that deal.

Khaleda is currently behind bars after being convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8, 2018. She was sentenced to five years of  imprisonment, which was later enhanced to ten years by the High Court.
