Fakhrul, 3 others get anticipatory bail in vandalism case

The High Court has granted eight-week anticipatory bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and three others in a case filed with Shahbagh police station.

The case was filed over clash between police and BNP men in front of the High Court in Dhaka on Tuesday, reports UNB.

The three other BNP leaders are -- BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and the party's Law Affairs Secretary Kayser Kamal.

The High Court bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan passed the order on Thursday.

Advocate Zainul Abedin and Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain stood for the bail petitioners while Advocate Sagir Hossain Leon assisted them.

The court also directed the BNP leaders to surrender before the Dhaka Sessions Judges Court after eight weeks, Leon said.

He said they filed bail petitions for six BNP leaders but among them BNP Vice Chairman Major (retired) Hafizuddin Ahmed was arrested by police and Joint Secretary General Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel failed to appear before the court.

So, hearing on their appeals did not take place on Thursday, Leon added.   

According to the case statement, two police personnel were injured in a clash between a group of BNP leaders and activists and police while they were staging demonstration in front of the High Court on Tuesday, seeking release of the party  chief Khaleda Zia.

A number of vehicles were vandalized during the clash.

Later at night, Shahbagh police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Matiur Rahman filed the case on charges of vandalism and assault on police against 28 identified and more than 500 unidentified people in connection with the clash.
