The High Court has ordered the government to rename the streets and installations named after people who shared anti-Liberation War sentiments to freedom fighters of respective localities across the country within 90 days.

The bench of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed in this regard on Thursday, reports BSS.

Dhaka University teacher and historian Prof Muntassir Mamun and journalist Shahriar Kabir filed the writ in 2012.

On May 14 of that year, the court issued a rule asking as to why it shall not pass order to rename such streets and installations.

As the order has not been implemented yet, the court has allowed time to comply with the order for the last time.

Barrister AK Rashidul Haque moved the case for the petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta appeared for the state.

The court set February 23, 2020 to submit compliance report in this regard.
