A Bogra court framed charges against 12 suspects, including Tufan Sarkar, a former Bangladesh Jatiya Sramik League district unit leader, accused in rape and assault cases filed by a teenage girl’s family after the girl was reportedly raped in 2017.
Bogra Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Shahriar Tarik’s court heard the recent development of the cases on Thursday, since police submitted a charge-sheet against 13 people in October 2017.
The suspected rapist Tufan Sarkar and the assault case suspect Shimul is now in jail and the rest of the accused in the latter case–Tasmin Rahman Asha, Luvli Hasan Rumi, Anjuara Begum, Mehdi Hasan Rupam, Atiur Rahman Atiq, Md Munna, Ali Ajam Dipu, Emarat Alam Khan and Robidas Jatin–is out on bail.
Bogra Municipality Ward 2 Councillor Marzia Hasan Rumki is absconding and one other named in the charge sheet were dropped out due to lack of evidence.
The criminal trial is set to begin on March 10, next year, said Additional Public Prosecutor Aslam Angur.
According to the case statement, on July 17, 2017 the girl was raped by Tufan in Bogra town. On July 28, the family and supporters of the suspect carried out a plan of battering the teenager and her mother.
They also shaved their heads and recorded the incident on their mobile phones.
