A Dhaka court on Monday sent a minor to the Juvenile Development Centre in Gazipur, in a case filed over a hit-and-run that killed one and injured other in Gulshan, Dhaka on Friday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim passed the order after Gulshan police station Sub Inspector (SI) Robiul Haque, investigation officer of the case, produced the minor before the court and pleaded to keep him behind bars for the sake of the investigation.

The underage driver, now 17, was arrested from his residence in Dhanmondi on Sunday night.

On Friday morning, Liyana Tripura Popy, a 23-year-old student and beauty parlour employee, was killed when a vehicle ran over the rickshaw carrying her, and her colleague Srabanti Tripura on Road No 79 at Gulshan. Both were critically injured and taken to a private hospital, where Liyana was declared dead.

Liyana’s younger brother Joyonto Tripura filed a case over the incident with Gulshan police station.

According to documents produced in court, the minor was driving the vehicle recklessly, and his involvement in the accident was confirmed by people living close to the crime scene.

The minor also confessed that he was driving the vehicle when the accident took place.

Joyonto expressed satisfaction over the arrest and demanded strict punishment for the driver.

The Lexus SUV that crashed into the rickshaw was recovered from the parking lot of a commercial building in Mohammadpur on Saturday morning. Sources at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) confirmed that the black SUV, registered as Dhaka Metro Gha-130902, is registered with business firm A N Corporation.

Liyana, the second of three siblings, moved to Dhaka four years ago, and managed to get a job at a beauty parlour in Gulshan two years ago. She was a second year student at Bandarban Government College.
