The convicts killed the minor girl after gang-rape in 2009
A tribunal in Khulna has sentenced two people to death in a case filed over the murder of a minor girl after gang-rape in the city’s Khalishpur area in 2009.
Judge Mohammad Mohiduzzaman of the Khulna Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict yesterday.
The condemned convicts are Md Babul Hawlader alias Kala Babul, 38, son of late Abdul Quader Howlader, and Emadad Hossain, 37, son of Sadek Hossain, of Bastuhara Colony. They were also fined Tk100,000 each.
Asha Mia, 22, Md Jahangir Ali, 24, Jahidul Islam, 40, and Nazrul Islam, 35, were acquitted as allegations brought against them could not be proved, Public Prosecutor Farid Ahmed said.
According to the prosecution, Afsana Mimi, 14, daughter of Md Imam Hossain of the Bastohara Colony, went to buy some puffed rice (Jhalmuri) from a nearby shop around 7pm on November 15, 2009, but did not come back home.
Imam filed a general diary (GD) with the Khalishpur Police Station the same night.
On the next day, police recovered Mimi’s body from a pond in the colony.
Her father filed a murder case with the police station against 17 unknown people. He, however, alleged that Kala Babul, Quader and Emdad used to harass his daughter.
On March 23, 2010, police pressed charges against six people.
