There will be a separate hearing for the underage accused

A Barguna court on Wednesday accepted the two charge sheets filed by police in the Rifat Sharif murder case.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Sirajul Islam Gazi around 2:15pm during the hearing also issued warrants for the arrest of the nine accused who are still on the run.

The court set October 3 to start hearing in the case for the 10 adults accused including Rifat’s wife Ayesha Siddiqua Minni, said her lawyer Mahbubul Bari Aslam.

It also fixed September 22 for the Juvenile Court to begin hearing for 14 minor accused, he said, adding that they were yet to get a copy of the charge sheet.

During the hearing, the court rejected bail petitions filed by the defence team on behalf of six adults accused — Al Kaiyum alias Rabbi Akan, Rezwan Ali Khan Hridoy alias Tiktok Hridoy, Md Hasan, Rafiul Islam Rabbi, Md Sagar, and Kamrul Hasan Saymun — who are currently behind bars.

The arrest warrants on Wednesday were issued for Mohaiminul Islam Sifat, Md Musa, Md Rakibul Hasan Rifat Hawlader, Md Naim, Md Rakibul Hasan Niamat, Md Saiyed Maruf Billah alias Mohibullah, Maruf Mallik, and Prince Molla.

Only the first two of these nine are from the list of adults accused.

Rifat Sharif, 22, was hacked on a Barguna road in the morning of June 26. He died in a hospital later in the day. The attack was caught on surveillance cameras.

Police on September 1 had submitted the two charge sheets in court accusing 24 people in the murder case, filed by Rifat’s father at the Barguna police station.

Rifat’s wife Minni was initially named as a witness in the case. But she was later arrested and made an accused for her reported involvement in the murder.

In the first charge sheet for 10 adults, Md Rakibul Hasan alias Rifat Faraji was made the No 1 accused and Minni No 7; and in the second one for 14 minors, Md Rashidul Hasan Rishan alias Rishan Faraji, brother of Rifat Faraji, was made the No 1 accused.

Police dropped the name of prime accused, Sabbir Ahmed Nayan alias Nayan Bond, from the first charge sheet since he died in a “gunfight” with the law enforcement agency on July 2, and urged the court to exempt him from the murder charges.

The minor accused — six of whom are currently behind bars — will be tried in a Juvenile Court.

Police so far have arrested 15 people, including those accused in the case and several suspects. Two of them, including Minni, are currently out on bail.
