Twelve more get acquitted as charges could not be proved
A Kishoreganj court has sentenced 10 people to life imprisonment over the murder of a farmer in the district’s Karimganj Upazila eight years ago.
Judge Md Abdur Rahim of the Additional District and Sessions Court yesterday afternoon delivered the verdict in presence of the convicts.
The convicts are Badal, Nayan, Manik, Sabuj, Lokman, Alamgir, Mizan, Giasuddin, Rahmat Ali and Mamun Mia. All of them were also fined Tk500,000 each.
Of the 10, Badal, Nayan and Manik are brothers.
State counsel Jiban Kumar Roy said the court also acquitted 12 other accused as charges levelled against them were not proven.
According to case details, followers of Abdul Hekim and Abdur Rashid had clashed on August 6, 2011 over a longstanding land dispute at Paloikanda village under Karimganj upazila.
Farmer Manik Mia, who was a follower of Rashid, and several others were hacked with sharp weapons and left injured during the clash. Manik succumbed to his critical injuries at a local hospital later in the day.
His brother Khairul Mia filed the murder case against 27 people at Karimganj police station the same day.
The court delivered the verdict yesterday after hearing testimonies of 12 witnesses and their cross-examinations.
